Sore Eyes in Cats – Is It a Reason to Visit a Doctor?


The owners of small kittens often face the problem of sore eyes in pets. This problem is caused by improper hygiene and irrepressible curiosity of the pet, as the result of which, dust and foreign objects get into the eyes. This causes the appearance of secretion. If cat has sore eyes accompanied by additional symptoms, should examine the pet for viral and bacterial diseases.

Possible Causes

Sour eyes can be treated at home, if the problem is caused by foreign objects or ordinary irritation of the mucosa. In all other cases, you should visit a veterinarian. Possible causes of thick eye discharge in cats:

With systemic fungal infections, a thick discharge may appear in the corners of the eyes. Usually the exudate is of light colors. In viral and bacterial diseases, there are always specific symptoms, such as fever, diarrhea, general weakness and loss of strength. Eye injuries in cats are accompanied by redness and lacrimation. Usually this does not affect the behavior of the animal. The cat does not lose appetite and behaves as usual. The appearance of microtrauma or scratches on the cornea is accompanied by the release of liquid exudate. In this case, there is a risk of infection of the eye and the development of conjunctivitis.

It is quite easy to help the pet at home. It is enough to wash the eyes with water or a decoction of herbs. With minor injuries, this will be enough, with severe injuries, you should also use antibacterial drops to prevent infection. You should not use any medical drops without consultation of the vet. In case of sore eye on cat you should do the following:

For the purification of the eyes and the skin around them, you can use plain water, weak green tea, chamomile teas, calendula or St. John’s wort (1 teaspoon of plant per cup of water). From medications furacilin is applied (1 tablet per glass of water), a weak solution of manganese or any antiseptic agent diluted with water in proportions 1:5. Treatment is carried out twice a day, in addition, you should use drops with anti-inflammatory properties from the veterinary pharmacy. It is necessary to consult a doctor if after 2-3 days of treatment the symptoms have not decreased.
