Even a tiny bump on the ribs in a cat can signal an approaching disease, which can be dangerous to the life and health of the pet. The thing is that seals in any part of the body are dangerous, regardless of the age of the pet. There is always a risk of a malignant course and the development of an aggressive form of cancer. That is why veterinarians around the world recommend to not ignore the appearance of any swelling in animals on the surface or under the skin.
The List of Dangerous Symptoms
Any kind of seal that have a malignant origin is considered dangerous. It is about lymphomas, sarcomas and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. In the most scenarios, these forms of cancer are found in individuals after the age of 10 years. For a long time, they may not manifest themselves in any way. Hardly ever, when the masters manage to find them at an early stage. But, even a tiny lump on the rib can cost a cat’s life, therefore it is recommended not to self-medicate in such cases, and especially not to wait for it to “resolve itself.” Worst of all, if such kind of seal appears in females who did not give birth. This may be one of the first symptoms of mastopathy, which is also characterized by discharge from the nipples and redness of the skin in the area of the mammary glands. To make a diagnosis, an abdominal ultrasound, abdominal x-ray and a neoplasm biopsy with a small-bore needle for histological determination are necessary. Treatment will depend on the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer. In some cases, it is possible to dispense with radiation and a course of chemotherapy, but more often, one has to resort to surgical intervention, during which the neoplasm is completely removed with the capture of healthy tissues and sent for additional histological determination. Regional lymph nodes are mandatory examined to exclude the presence of metastases. The prognosis largely depends on the age of the pet, the aggressiveness of the cancer and the timeliness of contacting a veterinarian.
Harmless for Life Reasons
It is better to understand that not every lump on the ribs in a cat means the development of a malignant tumor. This is especially true for young pets, among which the risk of oncology is minimal. Therefore, other variant must be considered:
- Injury. Even after a little drop, the cat may form a seal on the ribs. Small bruises do not pose a threat to the health of the pet and disappear within a few days. In appearance, hematomas usually resemble a large swelling of a dark blue color. In rare occasions, prosecution of a hematoma is necessary to clean it from blood clots. Concerns should be associated with shortness of breath, impaired coordination, and large swelling. Immediate hospitalization requires cases when the animal fell from a great height. Fractures and internal bleeding can be detected only in the clinic.
- Papilloma. If a soft Lump protruding above the surface of the skin is felt under the cat’s hair, then the probability of papilloma, which is often found at all ages, should be excluded. It does not pose a danger to the life of an animal, despite the fact that some oncologists claim that there is always a tiny chance of transformation of a papilloma into a malignant tumor. In the majority of cases, they are not touched, carefully observing the growth rate. Papillomas, which interfere with the pet, are constantly injured and rapidly increase in size. The procedure is carried out using cryodestruction or laser excision. In the area of formation, a small scar remains, which eventually resolves.
- Benign formations. In the most scenarios, animals have fibromas and lipomas, which can be successfully treated with surgical excision. If the bump on the rib of a cat has clear boundaries, it feels like a capsule, then the veterinarian should carry out diagnostic measures aimed at determining the type of tumor and exclude the malignancy of the process. For this, material for histological examination is taken from the neoplasm with a small-bore needle. Characteristic differences of lipomas – can reach significant sizes, can cause significant discomfort to the pet. It is recommended to remove it with aggressive growth. The prediction is favorable. Fibromas are not so large in size and tend to arbitrary self-destruction.

Masters of pets should to remember that a distinctive feature of benign formations is – they do not grow into regional lymph nodes and cranial bones. Malignant formations, even with timely detection and complete removal, are dangerous to the life of the pet.
