For instance, saw a fall from high altitude or accidentally stepped on a pet’s paw. In other cases all must wander, what could lead to the appearance of a bump on the cat’s front or back leg.

Detailed Overview of Possible Causes

Usually, there is no  great value for a cat, on which leg bump appears because a limping will be present as a damaged front limb or back one. It is highly important to find out what was the reason for the appearance of mass and exclude the possibility of serious pathologie’s progress. In order to do this it’s necessary to bring the pet to the veterinarian for visual examination and perform appropriate tests. In the majority of cases a biopsy of the formation, x-rays of the damaged limb is carried, in order to exclude such possible variants as:

  1. Insect bites. Cats that freely walk outside frequently are bitten by ants, wasps, bees, and flies. If the bite is on the cat’s leg area, then a pea-sized lump could occured. In most cases, pets lick the bite area, that is why it’s easy to find. Stinging insect bites could provoke a small edema which goes away by itself during several hours. Painful sensations are also present, but only under pressure directly on the lesion. It’s important to extract the sting if it left after a wasp or bee bite.
  2. Injury. If a lump on a cat’s leg has appeared after falling from height or active play, severe trauma of soft tissue or bones is likely to appear. Cracks and fractures of bones could be only excluded after x-rays. The reasons to do it may be a constant limping and huge edema of a damaged limb. Compound fractures require immediate pet’s hospitalization for surgical intervention. For closed fractures and dislocations (after reduction), a fixing bandage is applied until complete healing, which is confirmed by a control X-ray after 10-15 days. In case of bruises, there is no need to consult a veterinarian if the general condition of the pet is satisfactory and, apart from swelling of the limb, nothing bothers it. Small bruises heal by themselves during 3-5 days. Hematomas can also resolve without treatment, but in some situations it is necessary to puncture and pump out the liquid, especially if it localizes on the bends of the legs. The procedure is painless, duration is 15-20 minutes. The owner gets full instruction of caring for the wound until complete healing.
  3. Allergic reaction. In some situations even a food allergy may trigger the appearance of a lump on a cat’s front or back legs. But in the majority of cases the reason is hidden in close contact with potential allergens such as chemicals, wool, house dust or mold. Some cases can be connected with flea bite allergy or helminthic invasion. Distinctive features of allergic reactions are redness, baldness and severe itching. The last point could be the reason for the appearance of deep scratching on the animal’s body. If the owner does not take the problem under control in time, there is a high risk of complication of the process by a bacterial infection. If it is possible to identify and exclude the allergen from daily life or the pet’s diet, then the skin problems will go away on their own. But in most scenarios it is not possible to immediately identify a potential allergen, that is why a symptomatic treatment is applied. It includes taking antihistamines in combination with hormonal drugs. Unfortunately, some animals suffer from allergies all their lives, therefore, they have lifelong treatment, or it is also called supportive therapy.
  4. Growth. It could be of benign and malignant origin. Hard lump on a cat’s leg may turn out to be a cyst or sarcoma. Therefore, if a seal is found in an animal that is more than 10 years old, it is better not to risk it and immediately conduct a biopsy and histological examination, so that, if necessary, start treatment in time. Depending on the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer, the size of the tumor, chemotherapy or surgical excision of the formation with the capture of healthy tissue can be used. The prognosis depends on the pet’s age and the presence of concomitant pathologies.
