Why there Is Clicking Sound in Cat’s Ear?

A specific sound when pressing on the ear and discharge of purulent masses in a pet is a significant reason for urgent appeal to the veterinarian. The reason why there is clicking sound in cat’s ear can be two fairly common diseases – otitis and ear mange (ear mite).

Alarming Symptoms

If a specific sloshing sound is noticeable when pressing on the cat’s ear there is probably the development of inflammation. Everyone who lives with a pet should know the alarming symptoms that should alert the owners and encourage them to visit the vet. First and foremost the behavior of a sick cat is changing. The animal:

  • clicking noise in cat’s earrefuses to eat, or eats very little;
  • often shakes its head and scratches its ears;
  • bonks its head on furniture or carpet;
  • has sores on the face due to constant bonking;
  • moves with its head bowed to the side.

When pressing on the ear you can hear something clicking in cat’s ear. In this case, the animal may respond with anxiety on palpation of the ears – this is due to pain that accompanies inflammation. If the disease is on advance stage, dark mass could discharge from the external auditory canal. Animal’s ears blush, often non-healing erosions and ulcers appear behind its ears because of the constant scratching.

Signs of Otitis

Otitis is an inflammatory disease that can affect the outer part, middle and inner ear. The most favorable prognosis is for otitis externa. Moreover, this form of inflammation occurs most often. With the middle ear is affected, there is a high probability of transition of the disease to a chronic form, which is difficult to treat. This inflammation is especially dangerous for older animals, as in the absence of timely treatment it quickly leads to hearing loss. Otitis interna in cats is one of the most dangerous diseases. In addition to hearing loss, this form of inflammation can lead to infection of the cerebral cortex (meningitis). In advanced cases, the disease ends fatally. The symptoms of otitis:

  1. clicking sound in cat’s earsRedness and peeling of the skin of the external auditory canal;
  2. Acute or aching pain;
  3. Pain when palpation;
  4. Black plaque in both ears;
  5. Dark discharge;
  6. Sharp unpleasant smell.

In the initial stages, there is a slight redness of the ear. With the appearance of sharp pain the cat’s behavior changes: at the time of discomfort amplification the cat may suddenly jump up, or meow plaintively. When dull aching pain the animal is constantly pressed against the inflamed ear to the floor or its bed, avoids patting on the head.

When pressing, you can hear a clicking sound in cat’s ear, but this symptom is characteristic of an acute form of bacterial inflammation, and is accompanied by purulent secretions. Often the animal does not allow touching its ear. When you try to palpate the sore area it quickly gets annoyed and tries to escape.

The Symptoms of Ear Mange

The most common disease of cats, accompanied by pain in the ears – is ear mange. Inflammation is caused by a microscopic mite that feeds on dead particles of the epidermis. The risk group consists of kittens and young animals, often walking on the street. Symptom of disease:

  1. Itchy ears accompanied by shaking the animal’s head;
  2. The accumulation of thick dark mass in the ears;
  3. Popping noise in cats ear when pressed;
  4. Sores and wounds behind the ears caused by scratching.

Dark dense masses are the waste products of a mite. They clog the ear canal, resulting in inflammation. Often when trying to clean a pet’s auricle owners notice dark contents of pus and blood. Ear mange is dangerous for animals due to the risk of spreading of the inflammation to the middle and inner ear, meninges.

How to Treat Sick Ears?

You can start treatment only after confirmation of the diagnosis by a veterinarian. The symptoms of otitis media and ear mange are quite easy to muddle, so you need a microscopic examination of the discharge. Thus, the first thing you need to do is to consult a specialist. For the treatment of mite-borne lesions of the ears are used:

  • in cat's ear clicking soundDrops with amitrazin (Amitraze, Amit);
  • Drops for cats “Bars”;
  • Medications with dimexide in the composition;
  • Ear ointments (Oridermil).

Before treatment of the auditory canal, it is necessary to clean the ears from the secretion. To do this, use special lotions for cleaning – Bars, Otoklin. All products should be prescribed only by a vet after examination of the cat. It is important to take into account the general health and age of the animal.

You should not treat otitis in cats yourself. Antibacterial drugs are used in therapy, and the wrong choice of drug can lead to dangerous complications. Along with the drops against inflammation, a thorough antiseptic treatment of the external auditory canal is carried out. For this purpose, solutions of boric acid or peroxide are used.

In older cats, ear inflammation may be associated with dangerous age-related pathologies, such as tumors or abscess.
