The temperature of the nose of a healthy cat changes several times during the day. The structure of the tissue can also change slightly. Therefore, if you want to regularly touch the muzzle for diagnostic purposes, it is better to do it 2 times a day (immediately after awakening of the animal and during the period of maximum activity).
In professional veterinary medicine, the results of palpation alone are not sufficient to make a final diagnosis. There are several physiological reasons due to which the nose of the cat may become hot:
- The animal woke up recently. Wetness of the nose largely depends on how often the cat licks it. During sleep (and it’s completely natural), the cat cannot moisten the dried tissue with saliva. Eventually, the local temperature may rise slightly.
- Exposure to sunlight. Even a short street walk in the open sun will lead to the fact that the cat has hot nose.
- Impact of dry and hot air. During the winter months, the pet often retains against batteries to keep warm. If there is no humidifier in the apartment, it is likely that the cat’s nose will become dry and hot.
Do not worry, it is not necessary to provide any assistance to your pet, if its behavior and general condition has not changed. The temperature and wetness of the nose will soon come to the norm.
Pathological Causes that Can Be Treated at Home
Excessive carelessness is much more dangerous than excessive vigilance, so it is better to seek help from veterinarians than to miss a serious pathology. But in some cases, the problem can be solved at home, it is only important to determine the cause of the deviation correctly. To do this, you should pay close attention to the associated symptoms.
Cat has hot nose as a consequence of walking under the sun. But if the cat’s nose has become not just hot, but also red, flaky, it is likely that there is sunburn. Animals with pink spouts have special sensitivity to sunlight.
To eliminate the burn, you can use natural vegetable oil. If the pet is too aggressive when touching the muzzle, you can apply vaseline or Panthenol to the nose (in this case, you will have to hold the pet’s mouth for 5-6 minutes). But if the problem is repeated you still have to go to the vet. Otherwise, skin cancer may develop.
A warm dry nose in cat may be a sign of a mild allergic reaction. Related symptoms are:
- sharp change in the pigmentation (redness);
- rash on the face.
This type of allergy is usually manifested in case of direct contact of unprotected tissues of the nose with chemical substances and dyes. Especially often cats react negatively to dishes made of poor quality plastic.
Note!The first thing is to reduce the contact with potential allergens. Replace all plastic bowls with ceramic or glass ones. Applying a cool compress to the muzzle, in case of pronounced symptoms, it is possible to use Suprastin.
When to Contact a Veterinarian?
Home treatment is unacceptable if a cat has warm nose which is covered with cracks and scabs. It is especially dangerous to delay the visit to the vet if the pet’s behavior has changed and there are related disorders (vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constant drowsiness).
If a pet is constantly sneezing and experiencing obvious breathing difficulties, it may be a sign of respiratory infection. If there are visible dry formations in the nasal passages, it is likely that a tumor develops. It is impossible to make a diagnosis yourself: you will need an examination with a special endoscope, as well as a cytological examination of the contents of the sinuses.
Before going to the vet you can only alleviate the condition of the pet. To do this, you need to give the cat enough water and to moisten the air in the apartment. In most cases, dehydration itself is a sign of untreated, “neglected” diseases. In addition to a dry hot nose, you can notice:
- sunken eyes;
- dry gums;
- loss of skin elasticity;
- frequent breathing.
Sometimes the above symptoms may be accompanied by fever. To know exactly whether the cat has temperature, you need to have a special veterinary thermometer. The exact causes of a sharp rise in temperature and dehydration are determined by the veterinarian. Do not give any medications to the animal before the final diagnosis.
