Dark spots and dots on the tongue and lips of cats are consequences of hyperactivity of cells that secrete pigment responsible for skin tone. Fluffy pets are prone to pigmentation. Black dots on cat’s tongue can start to appear since birth. In this case, the tongue can be pigmented both strongly and weakly, with barely noticeable spots. Pigmentation can spread to the nose, mucous part of the mouth and lips. This phenomenon is absolutely not dangerous and does not require treatment.

Pigmentation in Cats

Sudden appearance of black dots on the cat’s tongue is a consequence of the activity of the cells responsible for skin color. Due to the increased production of pigment, some areas of the mucosa are painted in a darker color. Such a phenomenon is not dangerous, regardless of whether it is an acquired pigmentation or the cat was born with these spots.

Remember!
Pigment spots can form with age. If the cat is prone to such formations, dark spots appear before the age of three years. If the animal has no tendency to pigmentation, tongue and nose can remain pure throughout life.

Many owners have a mistaken belief that black dots on cat’s tongue are the symptom of a fungal infection. Candidiasis and other dermatological diseases of the mucous membranes and skin of cats are manifested by the formation of light spots and dots, but not dark. Pigmentation does not cause discomfort. The appearance of dark spots does not change the behavior of the pet, the appetite is as usual. In general, there is no cause for concern. It is interesting that pigmentation in cats often has a hereditary nature and appears in animals with dark hair and dark paw pads. The pigmentation is very rare in cats of light or reddish color with pink paw pads.

Pellagra

The disease caused by a lack of vitamin PP and B6 is called pellagra. In cats, this pathology is quite rare and is associated with a monotonous diet. In most cases, animals fed with on low-quality dry food of the low price segment face hypovitaminosis.

The composition of such animals’ feed is not balanced and does not always meet the needs of the body of the animal in certain vitamins. Street animals that do not have a regular diet also suffer from pellagra. Cats taken from the street often suffer from vitamin deficiencies, and the owners may not immediately understand what is the cause of lethargy and sleepiness of the pet. The ill cat has black dots on tongue. Pellagra in cats is manifested by points on the mucous membranes of the mouth, sometimes by the spots on the tongue, nose and ears. For accurate diagnosis you should consult a veterinarian, as plaque in the ears and nose may be the result of tick lesions, and the points on the tongue may be harmless pigmentation. If the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is carried out by adjusting the diet. It is recommended to buy special vitamin supplements for cats, depending on their age. If the cat eats natural products, you should introduce the following products:

  • liver;
  • reins;
  • sea fish;
  • milk;
  • carrot.

These products are rich in vitamin PP and will quickly eliminate its deficiency. To achieve the best effect, it is necessary to combine a therapeutic diet with special vitamin supplements. The recommended dosage of vitamins PP and B6 is up to 5 mg per kilogram of pet weight.

Fur

Quite often cat has black dots on tongue and they vanish after eating or drinking water. In this case, we are talking about the usual fur that appears when eating dark food. Often fur on the tongue is found after the cat plays with some objects, painted in a dark color. The dots on the tongue may remain if the animal was chewing plastic or painted wood. The particles of the dye are clogged between the papillae on the tongue and give the impression of dark dots and spots.

It is quite easy to distinguish fur from pigmentation or beriberi. You should just rub your pet’s tongue with a toothbrush. If the dark spots are easily gone and do not appear again, you can be sure that it’s a fur. When pellagra, dark areas can be cleaned but they appear again after some time. Pigmentation on the tongue can not be removed by any means at hand.

Owners should worry if a dark plaque is formed on the lips and nose of the pet, accompanied by a putrid smell from the mouth of the cat. In this case, you should take the animal to the veterinarian and examine the oral cavity. A possible cause can be dental disease, inflammation of the gums and bacterial stomatitis.
